Looking to save money in a tight economy? Think online oil filters. Want to know more about your car’s maintenance requirements and perform simple, basic and important service yourself? There’s no time like the present to take back control of your vehicle’s basic servicing, save some money and learn more about automotive servicing in general. Have fun and the satisfaction of knowing things were done correctly.
One of the easiest, yet most important maintenance functions you can perform yourself, is to change your oil filter. Interestingly many people in our society are completely ignorant and therefore helpless, when it comes to the simple mechanical functioning of their automobiles. It’s truly amazing that many drivers know nothing about their car and are only familiar with putting gas in the tank. This unfortunate fact puts many motorists at the complete and utter mercy of auto mechanics and service managers, many of whom may be completely unscrupulous, charging for unnecessary parts, services and labor.
Like the old saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself. At the very least, there is a great deal of self satisfaction and pride in doing something correctly yourself, while in the process saving some hard earned money!
Okay what essential tools and supplies do you need to change the oil filter on your vehicle?
A new oil filter is an essential part of maintaining your engine properly and extending its useful life. Although relatively easy to do yourself, it can be a little tricky depending upon its location.
First, you need to find the location of the oil filter. Depending on the make and model, sometimes it is located in a
position which is not easy to get to. Another issue is the degree of tilt in the mounting of the oil filter. If access to the filter is more difficult, than you can expect it may take a you a little longer to replace. If you are a real beginner and are unfamiliar with what an oil filter looks like or where to begin your search, consult your owners manual. If you don’t have the owners manual, most manuals can be found easily online through a Google search.
The next thing needed is a wrench to unscrew your old oil filter. Although this may be accomplished simply by hand without using a tool, the reality is that with the passage of time, the filter may be more difficult to unscrew, due to its coating of grease and oil. The best bet is to purchase a wrench specifically designed to remove oil filters. Several such wrenches are available, with the best probably being the sleeve type, which adds more leverage due to its longer arms. The exact type to use will be based on the amount of clearance around the oil filter.
Now, put on a pair of gloves, either latex or work, to protect your hands from the built up grease and oil on the old filter. With an old rag, wipe-off the grease and oil from the old filter to allow a better grip for the wrench.
Have an oil drain pan, plastic bowel or basin available and ready to receive the old filter, as soon as it comes off. Once loosed with the wrench, you can finish removing the oil filter by hand, inverting and placing the old filter into the basin to allow the oil to completely drain out. Next, wipe off the plate or post used for mounting the filter, with a clean rag and take out your new filter. Spread a few drops of new oil over the entire surface of the rubber gasket. Finally, screw your new oil filter on the post and run it up snug to the gasket. Once snug to the gasket, tighten the filter one more complete turn to tighten it. Read the instructions with your new oil filter to make sure of the recommended amount of tightening as some filters may be different.
Congratulations, you have just saved some money, had some fun learning something new and become a more self sufficient and capable person in the process. Next time we’ll replace the air filter, another important part of your engine’s operation and efficiency.
