DIY Oil Filters What You Need to Know

All automotive engines, whether gasoline or diesel, now come with standard oil filters of some kind. Commercially available automotive oil filters vary in their design, materials, and construction details.

Oil filters are basic components essential in protecting the vehicle engine from the damage that oil contaminants can pose. They are designed to remove contaminates from the oil as it lubricates the engine, and as with name brand oil, name brand oil filters are held up to certain standards.  Oil filters are subjected to numerous tests to assure the integrity of the filter and its components during vehicle operating conditions.

Filter bypass may occur if the filter is clogged or the oil is thickened by cold weather.  Filters mounted such that oil tends to drain from them usually incorporate an anti-drainback valve to hold oil in the filter after the engine (or other lubrication system) is shut down.  Filter diameters range in size, so you may need a small, medium and/or large size wrench to grip a range of filter sizes. These oil filters are available in different shapes & sizes and used in automobile industries for decontaminating oil from impurities.

Virtually, all types of materials are used to manufacture cartridge oil filters, materials such as cotton, polypropylene, metal wire to name a few. New materials and sizing have gone a long way towards reducing performance failures. Many modern filters are also designed using materials that last longer and most oil filters are covered by a limited warranty to be free from defects in materials and workmanship when installed and replaced.

About 45% of passenger car oil filters are sold to DIY (do-it-yourself) oil changers, with this in mind, low grade oil and poor quality oil filters are false economies and may actually shorten the service intervals and the life of your engine.

Oil filtration is simply a method of removing contaminants by trapping and holding them outside the system of oil circulation. According to experts, changing filters on a regular basis may have more to do with your car’s longevity than any other single factor. Fram oil filters are my personal favorite as they have a rough end that makes it easy to remove when changing filters. You can buy your online oil filters here.

  • Oil Changes are essential. I agree that if you end up purchasing an cheaper filter you may ultimately pay for that decision down the road. Always buy brands that you know and trust.
